Oltcit: A Unique Chapter in Automotive History
Oltcit was a Romanian car manufacturer established as a joint venture between the Romanian government and the French automaker Citroën. Founded in 1976, Oltcit aimed to produce small, affordable cars for both the domestic and international markets. Here’s a look at the history and evolution of this distinctive brand.

Historical Overview
Formation and Early Years (1976-1980)
Oltcit was created as a collaboration between the Romanian state (64%) and Citroën (36%) to produce a new line of small cars1. The factory was built in Craiova, Romania, and production began in the late 1970s.
The first models introduced were the Oltcit Special and Oltcit Club, featuring engines derived from Citroën’s existing lineup.

Expansion and Export (1980-1991)
The Oltcit Club, known for its compact size and practicality, was exported to various countries under different names, including the Citroën Axel. The car was equipped with a 1.1-liter or 1.3-liter engine and was available in several variants.

Despite its innovative design, the Oltcit faced challenges in quality control and market acceptance, which limited its success outside Romania.

Transition and Rebranding (1991-1994)
In 1991, Citroën withdrew from the joint venture, leading to the rebranding of Oltcit as Oltena1. The company continued to produce cars under the Oltena name until a new partnership was formed with Daewoo in 1994.
The factory in Craiova was later taken over by Daewoo, and eventually by Ford, marking the end of the Oltcit era.

Key Models and Features
Oltcit Special: A basic model equipped with a 652-cc engine from the Citroën Visa, designed for affordability and simplicity.

Oltcit Club: The mainstay of the brand, featuring a 1.1-liter engine and a more refined design. It was known for its practicality and compact size.

Citroën Axel: The export version of the Oltcit Club, sold in various European markets. It shared many components with Citroën models but was tailored to meet local market needs.
