Toshio Sumino established Autobacs as Suehiro Shokai Co., Ltd. in Fukushima-ku, Osaka in 1947. A year later, it underwent a reorganization to become Fuji Shokai Co., Ltd.
Sumino established Japan's first large-scale auto parts business, the Fuji Drive Shop, in 1960. In 1969, he entered the world of racing sponsorship by supporting a vehicle in the Japanese Grand Prix.
The "Autobacs Higashi Osaka Store," the first Autobacs store, debuted in Dait, Osaka, in 1974. The "Autobacs Hakodate Nakamichi Store" in Hakodate, Hokkaido, would be managed by Autobacs the next year. Autobacs began creating and selling its own motor oil and tires in 1977 for sale in its own stores.
