Panhard, originally known as Panhard et Levassor, is one of the oldest automobile manufacturers in the world, founded in 1887 by René Panhard and Émile Levassor. The company was a pioneer in the automotive industry, introducing innovations such as the first modern transmission and the "Système Panhard," which established the front-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout that became a standard for automobiles.
Panhard's early vehicles were known for their engineering excellence and were powered by Daimler engines under a licensing agreement. The company also made history in motorsports, with its cars winning several early automobile races, including the Paris–Bordeaux–Paris race in 1895.
In the post-World War II era, Panhard shifted its focus to lightweight and efficient vehicles, producing models like the Dyna X and the Panhard 24. These cars were known for their innovative use of materials and engineering to achieve high performance and fuel efficiency.
Panhard eventually transitioned to manufacturing military vehicles and was acquired by Renault Trucks Defense in 2012. In 2018, it became part of Arquus, a brand specializing in defense vehicles.
