Premium sports-luxury car manufacturer Erich Bitter Automobil GmbH was founded in Germany and then moved to Austria. Erich Bitter, the company's founder and a former racing driver who later became an auto tuner, importer, and designer, started building his own cars after his commercial dealings with the Italian automaker Intermeccanica came to an end.

Bitter specializes in rebodying automobiles made by other manufacturers. Its initial manufacturing ran from 1973 to 1989, and it sold cars in both Europe and the US. Following that, a number of prototypes with the potential for low-volume manufacturing appeared, but none were made available until the 2007 release of the Bitter Vero.
