Setra

Setra is a diminutive of the word "selvesttragend" (self-supporting). This relates to the cars' integrated design from the 1950s, a time when rival vehicles still had a separate chassis and body (often manufactured by separate companies). It is also probable that, with an eye to export markets, the corporation was cognizant that for non-German speakers, the term "Kässbohrer" is difficult to say. Until 1995 the corporation operated under the name Karl Kässbohrer Fahrzeugwerke GmbH, but in that year economic problems prompted its sale to Daimler-Benz AG (between 1998 and 2008 known, primarily in the United States, by the name of its parent company Daimler Chrysler) (between 1998 and 2008 known, especially in the United States, by the name of its holding company Daimler Chrysler). Setra has been a trademark of the Daimler subsidiary EvoBus GmbH since 1995.

When Daimler reorganized its North American bus operations in 2013, it was planned for Motor Coach Industries to partner with and take over the distribution of Setra by Daimler in North America on April 25, 2012. This partnership lasted until the end of 2017 when the REV Group took over distribution duties. Through its new company, Daimler Coaches North America, LLC, and with service assistance from Daimler Truck North America, Daimler has once more become the only distributor of Setra coaches in North America as of January 2020.
