Nissan
Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. (Japanese:, Hepburn: Nissan Jidsha kabushiki gaisha), doing business as Nissan Motor Corporation and sometimes abbreviated to Nissan[a], is a multinational Japanese automaker with headquarters in Nishi-ku, Yokohama, Japan. Nissan, Infiniti, and formerly Datsun are the labels under which the firm distributes its cars. Nismo is the name of their in-house performance tuning line of goods, which also includes automobiles. The Nissan zaibatsu, today known as Nissan Group, is the organization's first predecessor.
Since 1999, Nissan has collaborated with Mitsubishi Motors of Japan and Renault of France as a member of the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance (Mitsubishi joined in 2016).
Nissan has a 15% non-voting share in Renault as of 2013, whereas Renault has a voting interest of 43.4% in Nissan. Nissan has owned a 34% controlling interest in Mitsubishi Motors since October 2016.
Nissan ranked behind Toyota, General Motors, Volkswagen Group, Hyundai Motor Group, and Ford as the world's sixth-largest carmaker in 2013. Nissan was the biggest automaker in North America in 2014. Nissan was the 10th-largest automaker in the world in 2022 with $80 billion in revenue. It was also the top Japanese brand in China, Russia, and Mexico.
Nissan sold more than 320,000 all-electric vehicles globally as of April 2018, making it the top EV manufacturer in the world. The Nissan LEAF, which ranks as the second best-selling electric car globally, only behind the Tesla Model 3, is the most popular model in the automaker's entirely electric portfolio.
On July 1, 1911, in Tokyo's Azabu-Hiroo neighborhood, Masujiro Hashimoto () established the Kwaishinsha (Kaishinsha) Motor Car Works (, Kwaishinsha jidsha kj, A Good Company Automobile Manufacturer). The DAT, the company's first automobile, was created in 1914.
The model's name of the new automobile was an acronym of the last names of the company's investors:
Meitaro Takeuchi (Takeuchi Meitar), Rokuro Aoyama (Aoyama Rokur), and Kenjiro Den
In 1918, it was changed to Kaishinsha Motorcar Co., Ltd., and then in 1925, it was renamed once again to DAT Jidosha & Co., Ltd. (DAT Motorcar Co.). Besides producing passenger automobiles like the DAT and Datsun, DAT Motors also produced trucks. Due to a nearly nonexistent consumer market for passenger cars at the time and disaster relief efforts following the 1923 Great Kant earthquake, the company produced a significant number of trucks. The first DAT trucks were created for the military market in 1918. Using components and supplies imported from the United States, Jitsuyo Jidosha Co., Ltd. (jitsuyo = practical use or usefulness) developed tiny vehicles at the same time. (Better source is required)
During Japan's involvement in World War I, business activities were suspended as the corporation supported the war effort.
In 1926, the Tokyo-based DAT Motors decided to merge with the Osaka-based Jitsuyo Jidosha Co., Ltd (Jitsuyō Jidōsha Seizō Kabushiki-Gaisha) a.k.a. Jitsuyo Jidosha Seizo (established 1919 as a Kubota subsidiary) to become DAT Jidosha Seizo Co., Ltd Automobile Manufacturing Co., Ltd. (ダット自動車製造株式会社, DAT Jidōsha Seizō Kabushiki-Gaisha) in Osaka until 1932. The company-built Lila-branded light trucks and cars between 1923 and 1925. To become Automobile Industries Co., Ltd. in 1929, DAT Automobile Manufacturing Inc. joined with a division of IHI Corporation's manufacturing company.
The Datsun Type 11, or "Son of DAT," was the first "Datson" and was introduced by DAT in 1931. Datson's last syllable was altered to "sun" in 1933 when Nissan Group zaibatsu took over DAT Motors since "son" also implies "loss" in Japanese, giving rise to the moniker "Datsun" (, Dattosan).
The business was relocated to Yokohama and given the Nipponized name Jidosha-Seizo Co., Ltd. (Jidsha Seiz Kabushiki-Gaisha, "Automobile Manufacturing Share Company").
