Hummer

In 1992, AM General started marketing a civilian variant of the M998 Humvee, which led to the creation of the Hummer brand of pickup trucks and SUVs. Although it was abandoned in 2010, Hummer made a comeback as a GMC subsidiary in 2020.

The original Hummer H1, which was based on the military Humvee, as well as the subsequent H2 and H3 variants, which were built on smaller, civilian-market GM chassis, were all sold under the General Motors (GM) brand when the company bought the name from AM General in 1998.

By 2008, it was unclear if Hummer would survive the financial crisis. The brand was preserved by GM to look into its sale rather than being sent to the Motors Liquidation Company as part of GM's bankruptcy in 2009. No final agreement was reached, and in 2010, Hummer showrooms started to close.

The moniker returned to the market for the 2022 model year as an electric pickup truck and SUV offered under the GMC brand as the "GMC Hummer EV," rather than as a distinct manufacture brand. After a $2.2 billion investment to construct a range of all-electric vehicles in GM's Detroit-Hamtramck assembly plant, the pre-production variants of the EV started being produced in November 2021.
