Volvo Cars is a Swedish multinational manufacturer of luxury automobiles with its headquarters in Torslanda, Gothenburg (Swedish: Volvo personvagnar, stylized as VOLVO in the company's logo). The firm makes sedans, station wagons, and SUVs. The company's primary marketing justifications center on safety as well as its Swedish design and heritage.
Since 1999, when AB Volvo sold its automotive subsidiary, Volvo Cars, to Ford Motor Company, Volvo Cars has existed independently of its previous parent company, AB Volvo, which also produced heavy trucks, buses, and construction equipment (among other things). Volvo Cars, which were losing money, were sold by Ford to Geely in 2010. In 2021, Volvo Cars became public on the Nasdaq Stockholm stock exchange, however Geely still holds the bulk of the shares. Both Volvo Cars and AB Volvo use the Volvo emblem, and they work together to maintain the Volvo Museum.
Volvo Cars declared that by 2030, it will be a totally electric brand. Volvo Cars and Northvolt, a Swedish battery researcher and manufacturer, stated in June 2021 that they intended to create a 50/50 joint venture that would include a battery gigafactory and R&D center. The battery R&D facility would be based in Gothenburg, it was announced in December 2021. Gothenburg was also selected as the site for the battery gigafactory in February 2022. In a joint venture with Geely, Volvo Cars shifted its hybrid engine research and manufacturing capabilities from Skövde and Zhangjiakou to Aurobay in 2021 and 2022.
