Nicolas Hayek, CEO of SMH (makers of the Swatch watch brand), started exploring a concept for a new automobile in late 1982 employing the same types of production techniques and personalization elements that helped make Swatch watches successful. He felt that a segment of prospective customers who want a modest, fashionable compact city car had been overlooked by the automobile industry. The "Swatchmobile" was the name given to this concept soon. The new automobile, which will have two seats and a hybrid motor, was first designed for SMH by Hayek's private business Hayek Engineering AG.

A joint venture between Mercedes-Benz AG and Zhejiang Geely Holding Group was formed in 2019 with the goal of developing Smart-branded vehicles in China for international sale. The business's main office is in Ningbo. While the brand was historically renowned for producing microcars and subcompacts, particularly the Fortwo and Forfour, at Smartville in Hambach, Moselle, France, and in the Revoz factory, it currently makes tiny battery electric vehicles in its production facility in China (Novo Mesto, Slovenia). Smart Europe GmbH, with its headquarters in Stuttgart, Germany, presently manages its distribution, marketing, and after-sales operations in Europe.

Micro Compact Car AG (MCC), a partnership between SMH and Daimler-Benz, established the brand in 1994. In 1998, MCC changed its name to MCC smart GmbH and later to smart GmbH after becoming a completely owned subsidiary of Daimler-Benz. In 2006, DaimlerChrysler (later Daimler AG) acquired smart GmbH, converting it into a nameplate under the Mercedes-Benz Cars business.

The Swiss watchmaker Swatch and Mercedes-Benz collaborated to create the "Swatch Mercedes ART," which gave rise to the moniker Smart. For the "cute," "compact," and "forward-thinking" style of the automobile, the company's branding lowercases its logotype and the logo featuring a "c" and an arrow, respectively.
