Company established in 1998 by current CEO Jerod Shelby.

2004 saw the completion of the first SSC Ultimate Aero prototype at the corporate office in West Richland, Washington.
In 2006, the Ultimate Aero beat the Ferrari Enzo's previous record on the slalom course used by Road & Track magazine.

Guinness World Records confirm that on September 13, 2007, the SSC Ultimate Aero set the record for the fastest production car, with an average peak speed of 412 km/h (256 mph) across two runs traveling in opposite directions at speeds of 414.31 km/h (257 mph) and 410.24 km/h (255 mph).
SSC stated on July 10th, 2008 that their Dubai showroom would open in February 2009.

SSC revealed intentions to introduce the Ultimate Aero EV in 2008. (Electric Vehicle). SSC anticipates launching the initial prototype in February 2009. The initial press release claimed that the automobile could be recharged in 10 minutes using a 240 V plug, although numerous sources have disputed this claim as being implausible. Since then, the press release has modified.

23 August 2010 - A next-generation version of the SSC Ultimate Aero is in the works, according to CEO Jerod Shelby, who also discusses the competition between Shelby and Bugatti for the title of World's Fastest Car in a USA Today story.


July 17, 2011 - The name Tuatara, which is pronounced "two-are-tah-rah," has been given by SSC to their next-generation sports automobile. It is believed to have a unique 6.9 liter V8 engine with a rated output of 1350 horsepower and a maximum output of 1700 horsepower.

Due to a settlement with Carroll Shelby Licensing and Carroll Shelby International, Shelby SuperCars changed their name to SSC North America in 2012.
SSC releases the SSC Ultimate Aero XT special edition in August 2012. The SSC Ultimate Aero is being retired by SSC with a limited special edition as a replacement for the soon-to-arrive SSC Tuatara. SSC is releasing the final special edition, known as SSC Ultimate Aero XT, to commemorate its run.

The car will be produced in a small batch of only five units and use some key components found in the SSC Tuatara. These components include the 6.9 liter all-aluminum twin-turbo V8 engine unit, which SSC developed exclusively, as well as several other features like improved cooling, upgraded transmissions, and a seven-speed paddle-shifted gearbox. Official ratings for the engine are 1,300 horsepower and 1,004 pound-feet of torque.
2013 - During the Dubai International Motor Show, a prototype SSC Tuatara is presented and dubbed the "Crown Jewel" of the occasion.
2015 - The final Ultimate Aero XT is sent, marking the end of the model's manufacture.

During the Pebble Beach Concours in 2018, SSC North America announced the launching of the 2019 SSC Tuatara.

First deliveries of the Tuatara are scheduled in the third quarter of 2019.
2020 January: First production the delivery of Tuatara to its owner in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
SSC North America performs its first high-speed test on October 10 at Pahrump, Nevada, with an early peak speed estimate of 316.1 mph. Later, when differences between satellite data and video analysis revealed a disparity in the speed, this assertion was withdrawn. CEO Jerod Shelby apologized for the errors in front of the public and pledged improved testing with more redundancy and transparency.

17th of January 2021 In the Kennedy Space Center's Shuttle Landing Facility, the Tuatara's ongoing high speed testing resulted in an average peak speed of 282.9 mph (455.3 km/h) on a 2.5-mile runway (Northbound: 279.7 mph (450.1 km/h), Southbound: 286.1 mph (460.4 km/h)). Owner of the Tuatara and amateur driver Larry Caplin was responsible for the high-speed drives. Racing Logic, a company that provides automobile telemetry, and independent analyst Robert Mitchell, who was one of the most vocal opponents of SSC's October 2020 speed claim, were both present at the test.

May 14, 2022 - At Space Florida's Launch and Landing Facility, Larry Caplin's Tuatara clocked a one-way speed of 295 mph (475 km/h) over a distance of 2.3 miles (3.7 km). Two Racelogic VBOX GNSS and a Life Racing GPS speed measuring device, in addition to the on-site Racelogic technician, confirmed this.
