Since January 16, 2021, Stellantis has owned a subsidiary of the German automaker Opel. General Motors, an American carmaker, controlled it from 1929 to 2017; from 2017 to 2021, the PSA Group, Stellantis' predecessor, owns it. In the UK, Opel automobiles are distributed under the Vauxhall brand. Up to 2020, several Opel cars were badge-engineered in Australia under the Holden name, in North America and China under the Buick, Saturn, and Cadillac brands, and in China under the Holden brand.

Adam Opel established a sewing machine business in Rüsselsheim am Main in 1862, which is where Opel got its start. The firm started making bicycles in 1886, then in 1899 it made its first car. Under Fritz von Opel's direction, the business contributed significantly to the history of aviation and spaceflight with the Opel RAK program, the first rocket program in the world. Several land speed records were set, and the first rocket-powered flights were made in 1928 and 1929. Opel became entirely acquired by General Motors in 1931 after the carmaker became a totally owned subsidiary and was listed on the public market in 1929. This marked the beginning of nearly 90 years of American ownership of the German manufacturer.

With Volkswagen, PSA became the second-largest carmaker in Europe after the acquisition of Opel, the English twin sister brand Vauxhall, and the European auto financing company from General Motors in March 2017 for €2 billion ($2.3 billion).

The Opel company is still based in Rüsselsheim am Main. Together with its English sibling marque Vauxhall, the corporation is present in more than 60 countries and develops, engineers, produces, and sells passenger cars, light trucks, and automotive components under the Opel name.
