Hubert "Hub" van Doorne established the business in 1928 under the name Commanditaire Vennootschap Hub van Doorne's Machinefabriek. A. H. Huenges, the director of a brewery, was his co-founder and investor. Huenges had Van Doorne fix his car multiple times, and after seeing how well he did, Huenges offered to lend him money for his company. In a modest workshop on the brewery's property, Hub got to work.

Hub and Wim van Doorne, who were now in charge of the business, changed the name to Van Doorne's Aanhangwagen Fabriek (also known as Van Doorne's Trailer Factory) in 1932. The DAF firm was thereafter entirely under the control of the van Doorne brothers after Huenges departed the company in 1936.

Ford 42 truck 42 to 64 modifications were created by DAF for off-road use. The M39 Pantserwagen, one of the few armored vehicles produced by DAF, utilised advancements of this Trado drivetrain. The M39 was not produced in time for World War II; just three were used in the invasion of the Netherlands in 1940.

Luxury vehicles were extremely hard to get after World War II. For DAF, this meant a significant opportunity. The business changed its name to Van Doorne's Automobile Factory in 1949 when it began producing buses, trucks, and trailers. The DAF A30 was the first kind of truck.

With models like the DAF YA-126 and DAF YA-328 "Dikke Daf," DAF played a significant role in the re-equipment of the Dutch Army's softskin vehicles throughout the 1950s. These made use of the H-drive, an all-wheel drive system created from Trado modifications.
