Between 1909 and 1919, America produced the luxury car known as the Abbott-Detroit. It was created by John G. Utz, who also created the Chalmers and had previously worked for the Autocar Company and Olds Motor Works. The Abbott was a strong, well-built vehicle with a Continental engine. By 1913, when electric lighting and starting had become universal, the automobiles were covered by a lifetime warranty.

A total of 3000 automobiles were anticipated to be produced for the 1911 model year. After reaching a daily output of 15 to 20 units by 1916, the business relocated from Detroit to a bigger factory in Cleveland. The company's financial situation became too difficult as a result, and they filed for bankruptcy in April 1918.
